International UEF Symposium 99 "Invention focuses on the rebirth of school facilities in forms that recognize and celebrate the continuing process of invention in education itself. "Maintenance" focuses on preserving the massive investment already committed to the educational infrastructure. "Renewal" focuses on breathing new life into old. The slogan, "Global Challenges and Community Solutions" says that many of the same challenges are being experienced by urban educational facilities worldwide how to deal with deteriorating infrastructure, ill-preparedness for the 21st century particularly in the area of technology readiness, security concerns and the challenges of incorporating into the design of school buildings, newly developed curriculum, new understandings in the areas of multiple intelligence theory and teacher-student relationships. To be truly effective, solutions must be tailored and customized toward the local community. But what is the "global community" in the context of education? As technology such as the Internet, e-mail and distance learning shrinks "global" to manageable proportions, it simultaneously alters "community" beyond the neighborhood to encompass the world at large. |
