Kanu o ka 'Aina Learning 'Ohana
About
The Kanu o ka âÃina Learning âOhana was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 2000 by Hawaiian educators, grassroots practitioners, and community leaders committed to closing the achievement gap for native Hawaiians.
As an innovative, community-based organization, the Kanu o ka âÃina Learning âOhana has achieved unprecedented success in seven short years, incubating and supporting a family of highly effective programs that span from the womb to the tomb, and impact thousands of Hawaiians on three islands.
The organization leads the Native Hawaiian charter school movement, resulting in much improved educational attainment among traditionally hard-to-reach students and a hope for educational evolution with a potential reach much beyond Hawaiâi.
A founding principle has been to share learned knowledge with other communitites engaged in closing the economic and achievement gap. From grant writing to business management to communications and leadership training, Kanu o ka âÃina Learning âOhana shares its acquired knowledge, building organizational capacity and inspiring communities in Hawaiâi, the U.S. Mainland and throughout the Pacific region.
With a staff of over 75 employees, and a budget of over 9 million dollars, the Kanu o ka âÃina Learning âOhana provides direct services to more than 200 learners from infants and adults using a number of temporary facilities and learning sites throughout North Hawaiâi and another 2,000 of learners throughout the islands.
All programs of the Kanu o ka âÃina Learning âOhanaâs are family-oriented and advance Hawaiian culture and traditions. Grounded in an innovative pedagogy of aloha developed through ongoing action research, programs are designed to honor the past, address the present, and serve the future.
