Berkeley High SchoolIntroduction The campus and community of a diverse urban high school, built in the 1930s, created a plan that would “rescue the school’s tarnished image…replacing the ugly fence and temporary trailers..and woefully inadequate …facilities…” Further workshops generated a design program to complete the master plan, define two quadrangles, and provide much-needed services and open space. The architects were selected to work with the superintendent, the principal, teachers, parents, students, special interest groups, and the historical society, together generating the design program. The year-long inclusive design process set the overall parameters of the buildings.
