Moore Square Museums Magnet Middle SchoolNarratives
Architect Narrative Like many urban schools across the country, this school encourages a strong connection between the school, its students and the surrounding community. Designed at the edge of a historic neighborhood, the school provides a heart to many cultural activities. Community integration and participatory learning were at the heart of the conceived design of the school. By embracing its downtown location, the school provides valuable opportunities to extend the learning environment well beyond its walls. As the name implies, the local museums provide the backbone for the magnet school experience.
Located on the southeast corner of a community square, the school anchors the urban park with a large public entry tower. The school is designed around several large courtyards featuring views of the city beyond. The courtyards are enclosed for security purposes, allowing students to use them as exterior learning spaces. Classrooms in the building are stacked vertically to respond to the small urban site. The gymnasium and drama room are cut into the topography at the basement level.
Educator Narrative “Because our campus is located in the heart of downtown, we are ideally situated to realize our goal - joining with museums and cultural organizations to enhance learning. Students, teachers, and parent volunteers can walk to many museums, and museum staff can readily visit our campus to lead student projects. The convenience of the museum resources is an essential component of our identity.”
