Randall FieldingTwo Hats
Randall Fielding wears two hats, one as a Principal of Fielding/Nair International, an award-winning planning and design firm, and another as the editorial director of DesignShare, an online journal and library of facility planning. DesignShare is a premier resource for research on the design of learning environments. The Web site has received seven awards for design and quality of content, and is accessed each month by more than 25,000 educators, architects, and planners worldwide.
One of Fielding’s roles is to assemble a team of 12 leading educational facility planners each year to serve as reviewers for DesignShare’s awards program, co-sponsored by School Construction News. Facilitating the review process and evaluating innovative schools continually expands Fielding’s knowledge base as an architect and planner.

Designing Schools–collaborative approach
Since launching Design Share in 1998, Randy has developed collaborative relationships with planners and architects around the world; as a result, he can assemble an effective team in any location. Randy often serves as both the educational facility planner and the Design Architect, partnering with local firms for Construction Documents, Engineering, and Construction Administration services. “Your vision is alive and serving children. I don’t know how you can sit in Minnesota and not stop what you are doing and fly right down …Please pinch yourself for me, you aren’t dreaming, your client is ecstatic!” –Todd Miller, President Yeshiva Elementary

Education & Professional Background
Randy earned a Master of Architecture Degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago, in 1981, where he was the Chief Editor of the annual journal of the school of architecture. He served as a project designer at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, where he planned and designed an 8,000-student university. Randy launched Fielding & Associates in 1983, a Chicago architectural firm, specializing in environments for learning and community. In 1997, he sold Fielding & Associates and relocated to Minneapolis, where he founded DesignShare.

“Randy, you are amazing! This drawing looks great. I was so excited to see this I nearly jumped out of my chair. You put a face on my visions and that shifts this whole thing to a new gear.” –Chris Hazleton, Director, Harbor City International School, Duluth, Minnesota

Memberships, Awards, Publications
Randy is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Council of Educational Facility Planners International. He is on the editorial advisory board for both School Construction News and School Planning and Management Magazine. He has authored more than two dozen articles in the U.S. and Europe, and co-moderated workshops on a variety of topics, including community involvement in master planning, patterns in educational facility design, the effects of brain-compatible learning on facilities, wireless technology in schools, and lighting design. Randy is the recipient of numerous design awards, including a 2002 Council of Educational Facility Planners International”Impact on Learning Award.”

“As a public school facility planner, I need to tell you that I find DesignShare to be the single most valuable resource available to me in any medium. The depth, breadth, and quality of the articles and links never ceases to amaze me”
Robert Matschulat, Facilities Planning Specialist, Jefferson County Schools, Colorado

Excerpt from a review of Yeshiva Elementary:
“The architect [Fielding], a national innovator in school design, softened the mass by breaking up the new addition into zigzag bays… With its generous windows and rhythmic angularity, the addition is jazzy in a gentle, street-friendly way. And, in contrast to all those retro buildings with faux-historical references, this one reflects its own time and place…
Besides light, the interior owes much of its appeal to an explosion of color - 22 separate colors, to be exact, ranging from warm terra cotta to pale lavender, vivid orchid and grass green in the halls and classrooms.
Now, let the users weigh in. ‘It’s a child’s dream,’ says Perel Wachsman, a teacher. ‘A teacher’s, too,’ says one of her colleagues, Gila Saltzman. ‘The kids like the playground so much we can’t get rid of them at the end of the day!’ Rabbi Naftali Kalter, Yeshiva’s principal, says the sunny setting ‘puts everyone in a good mood. They’re more happy, yet more serious about learning.’
In the play area below, little boys in yarmulkes tumble down a curvy, bright blue slide, shrieking with delight. A lot of architects would kill for raves like that.”

–Whitney Gould, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nov., 2001
